Most people know Simon Cowell as the brutally honest judge originally from American Idol. As someone with such a keen ear for talent, it turns out that Simon Cowell singing is anything but a display of talent. This raises a question. How is it possible for someone who is so good at judging others’ singing can be so bad at it himself?
There are plenty of people who have debated this online. The main argument is that one can be a good judge of food but does not necessarily have to be a chef to be such a good judge. Simon Cowell singing poorly does not mean he has no skills at knowing when he hears a beautiful singing voice.
The theory behind this is that having knowledge about something does not mean you have to have the skill about the same thing. Simon Cowell has been in the music business for a long time. He has plenty of experience gaining the skill of having a good ear for singing. With his added experience as an American Idol judge as well as a judge on the X Factor, he has honed his knowledge of popular singing even more. He has been hugely influential in the discovery of many of the top singing acts of recent years including 5th Harmony, Kelly Clarkson, and Carrie Underwood.
He allegedly earns about $95 million every year. Married to Lauren Silverman, the 58-year-old is capable of not only detecting talent when he hears it. He also knows what will sell to the mainstream. He says that he has the tastes of a teenage girl which is one reason that he can pick out good singing voices. He knows what they like to listen to in terms of tone and pitch in a singing voice.
Most people who have heard Simon Cowell singing either on television or on clips via YouTube would agree that he has a terrible voice. Most of these people are themselves judges of what sounds good and not professional singers. This goes to show how it is possible that a bad singer like Simon can pick out a talented singer just by listening.
People can also judge him for how commercial the talent he picks tends to be. That does not necessarily mean that these singers are truly good. Their voices simply sound trendy. Of course, they have to stay on pitch and sing in tune. But, they may not have the talent that a classically trained singer possesses.
People who have been on his shows or judged by him claim he is a highly critical person which is also evidenced by the mean remarks he makes while judging. It would seem hypocritical that someone who cannot sing can be so mean. Then again, most people find that he can afford to have his attitude.
Still, the reality show judge does know what sells. He knows what specific singing styles will make the sales of recordings skyrocket. He is not ashamed to admit that he himself cannot sing and has been happy enough to demonstrate this on the X Factor. During one show he was singing an Elvis song which was so abominable it made the television crowd laugh.
He is a founding member of a British entertainment firm called Syco. He spends most of his time acting as a television producer as well as a judge. He was rated by Time magazine as one of the top 100 most influential people both in 2004 and in 2010. The Daily Telegraph ranked him as number six in 2008 in Great Britain’s most influential men.
